Registrations Open Again for Hungary’s Film Rebate Scheme

After a pause on applications was initiated last year by the previous government, the film production incentive program is again open for business from July 1st, 2026.
Ervin Nagy, Hungary’s culture minister, released a statement recently regarding the country’s 30% rebate scheme:
“Today, we have opened a new chapter in our cooperation with the film industry by lifting the blockage on the tax incentive system that ensures the smooth and predictable operation of the Hungarian film industry.”
Hungary’s successful incentive program began in 2004. Thanks to its diverse locations, highly experienced crews, professional infrastructure and state-of-the-art studios, the country’s become one of the most sought-after filming hubs in Europe. For this reason, international productions for film and TV setting up home in Budapest have become a common sight. Notable projects that have filmed in Hungary include Blade Runner 2049, Dune, The Day of the Jackal, The Witcher, Maria, The Brutalist and many, many more.
A decree from the previous government late last year had set a semi-annual cap in the amount of 140 billion HUF on registration numbers for new film productions for the first half of 2026. The situation for the second half of the year was still undecided until now. The good news is that from 1 July 2026, registrations for eligible film productions have been officially opened, meaning there is no limitation to the number of support applications the National Film Office will accept.
The processing time of applications, however, is expected to be somewhat longer for the time being due to the backlog of the last six months. In other words, applications should go in well advance to secure a place in the queue. This delayed process will gradually ease though as the backlog is dealt with and things are expected to get back to normal by the end of this year.
Important to note that no other details of the Film Act have been changed and submissions happen under the same legal framework. The annual collection amount of 70 billion HUF – from which the rebate is distributed – is likewise unchanged.
